When Anthony Smith goes out to hire, NSCC is the first place he looks.
“The students that come out of there are well-trained,” says Anthony. “As a business owner, the College gives me a resource I can count on.”
NSCC also gave Anthony the knowledge and motivation to co-found ABLE Engineering Services in 2009. The Salmon Beach, NB native says he began his studies in the Mechanical Engineering program at the University of New Brunswick, but soon decided he wanted something more hands-on. A friend told him about the Mechanical Drafting program at NSCC’s Lunenburg Campus, so he enrolled and discovered it was exactly what he was looking for.
“I developed the skills base and confidence to do a job without anyone holding my hand. That allowed me to start a business out of my basement working with an engineer who needed a draftsman, and that led us to create ABLE Engineering Services.”
Now known as the ABLE Group of Companies, the multidiscipline firm has three offices – Chester, Upper Tantallon and Bridgewater – to serve Nova Scotia. But Anthony, who is the group’s general manager, is particularly happy to be based on the province’s south shore.
“There were no engineering firms here, so we filled a need. Instead of commuting an hour each day to Halifax, we get to live and work here, and we love it. That’s why we call ourselves a homegrown solution.”
