Darfur native plans caring future in NS

From Darfur to NSCC to Dalhousie, Fatima Adam is following her dream to become a nurse.

The CCA Link program was very challenging, but the instructor and my classmates, we were a really great team and that support made it much easier for me.

Fatima's husband is currently enrolled in the Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (Avionics) program at NSCC's Aviation Institute, part of the Akerley Campus in Dartmouth.

Fatima Adam always knew she wanted to be a nurse. It’s the path she’s taken to fulfill her dream that makes her story so compelling.

In 2006, Fatima and her husband, Abdelkarim Musa, arrived in Canada from Egypt after fleeing war-torn Darfur in Sudan. She enrolled in an English as a Second Language (ESL) program, started a family and later entered the African-Canadian Transition program at NSCC’s Akerley Campus. That’s when she saw a poster promoting the Waterfront Campus’ Continuing Care Assistant (CCA) Link program.

“I knew it would put me on track to be a nurse, so I enrolled. The program was excellent. Everything I needed to know, the instructor and the courses covered.”

Fatima did her work placement at Northwood, an assisted living complex in Halifax’s north end. “She was an exceptional student, the best I ever had,” says her mentor, Harry Mazerolle, a CCA at Northwood. “All of the residents loved her and hated to see her go.”

The experience was such a positive one that Fatima is now working for We Care Home Health Services. “I love it. People get to stay in their homes and be independent because I give them support.”

Fatima plans to enroll in Dalhousie University’s Transition Year Program, the next step on her journey to becoming a nurse.  “The program I took at NSCC will help me reach my goal. That’s all I could ask for.”
