"I recognized my inner desire to move forward, strengthen my abilities and follow my path to destiny. I also remember the road made before me by ancestors and will continue their advocacy, always thinking seven generations ahead."

A national organization focused on Aboriginal community economic development, CANDO builds capacity and delivers programs and services to First Nations Economic Development Officers.

When her high school guidance counsellor told her she’d never go to college, Rose Julian dropped out and started a family.

Now the proud mother of eight, this lifelong learner, Paqtnkek Mi'kmaw Nation member and native rights advocate recently had an epiphany: she would go back to school, further her education and apply her training to drive change in her community.

A call to her band’s education counsellor set her on the path to the Business Administration program at NSCC’s Strait Area Campus.  There she found a very supportive learning environment.

“My instructors got that how I apply learning may be different. They kept me engaged and they really believed in me, even though some days were tough.”

Today, Rose is driving change as the Economic Development Officer for the Paqtnkek Mi'kmaw Nation and as Vice President of CANDO, advocating on First Nations economic opportunities, challenges, innovation and partnerships at the local, regional and national level . She’s also pursuing her MBA at CBU.

Though proud to rise above her guidance counsellor’s original prediction, Rose is more excited that she’s helping to make a difference in her community.

“My heart beats here. The teachings of my ancestors made me realize this is my destiny.”
