Eco-tourism a natural fit for NSCC grad

Ryan Barry makes it his business to show tourists Nova Scotia’s true nature.

I took my time developing my business plan to make sure I got it right. It was probably about eight months of work. When I presented it to the bank, they were very impressed.

Fast Fact

When Ryan's company was listed on Trip Advisor in 2009, it was the 60th Nova Scotian company to be recognized by the world's largest online travel review site. Months later, Great E.A.R.T.H. Expeditions was ranked number one.

Ryan Barry was a child when his brother introduced him to Nova Scotia’s most spectacular landscapes. Today, he’s sharing those landscapes with people from around the world as the owner and operator of Great E.A.R.T.H. Expeditions.

A graduate of the Tourism & Hospitality Management program at NSCC’s Akerley Campus, Ryan hatched the idea for his eco-tourism venture while working as a hotel bellman.

“People often asked what they could do in Nova Scotia, so I sent them to places I’d been. Then I thought, why not go and teach them what I know?”

Ryan says NSCC gave him not only the contacts to strike out on his own, but the confidence to do it. “You can’t be shy and give guided tours, so the opportunity to give presentations to classmates helped build my self-assurance. Plus, the skills I learned for running a hospitality property were easily transferrable for running this business.”

With three fully-licensed tour guides on call and two mini-vans, Ryan’s business has grown considerably since he launched it in 2006. He plans to add corporate and youth tours geared to the local market in the near future.

“This is one of the most beautiful places in Canada. I want to get people out and showcase what we have in our own backyard.”
