Finding a career that fits isn’t always easy – for Christine White, it took exploring the world.

After completing her English degree at Acadia University, Christine spent six years abroad teaching and travelling in Asia, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Upon her return to Canada, she immediately began looking for work but despite her experience and skills, she struggled to find meaningful employment.

A friend recommended Christine to the Public Relations program at NSCC. At first, Christine wasn’t sure, but within the first few weeks of the program, she quickly realized public relations was something she had been doing her entire life.

“Through student union and student council, through event planning and organizing, it’s always been a part of me,” she says. “I just didn't know it was public relations.”

It didn’t take Christine long to realize she was on the right path. “The first couple of weeks helped me discover what I wanted to do in life and how much I love PR.”

The perfect career

Now, Christine is the Director of Communications & Marketing for Taste of Nova Scotia, where she works with over 200 members who are committed to offering remarkable local culinary experiences and products.

“I do a little bit of everything and that's what I love,” says Christine. “No day is ever the same. One day we could be organizing an event on George’s Island, proofing the culinary guide, or on a photoshoot.”

Christine and her team work closely with members and industry partners on culinary tourism marketing, export development and event management, ensuring Nova Scotia a place on the world stage as a top culinary destination. She says it’s no hard task to highlight the authenticity, diversity and quality of the many flavours of Nova Scotia.

“We really do have an amazing selection. What grows together goes together. Everything is authentic to our land and sea. We don't have to fake anything,” she says. “We've got everything here in Nova Scotia and passionate people on top of all that."

Christine adds, “It turned out that a combination of a university education and NSCC helped me find my perfect job. I love what I do. I love what our mandate stands for, how I feel when I come to work in the morning and the impact we make on the culinary tourism industry in Nova Scotia each and every day.”
